Who Owns the Learning, Pg 68
Quote: “I know I’ve been teaching my way, and living in Canada and the west, I’ve seen the world from one particular viewpoint. But when you have a kid pipe up and say, ‘Hang on a second, my cousin lives in Israel, and I have a different point of view on this whole thing.’ it just makes the discussion that much richer.”
Question: How can I challenge student to use empathy while dealing with history.
Connection: When I was in Iraq I had the opportunity to either talk to, or listen to the conversations of a number of Iraqi’s discussing different world events. The thing that struck me is how incredibly different many of these people’s perspectives were from my own, or those of the average American. Some of the cultural differences between the Iraqi and American, or Western people, are much larger than the average person realizes. We look at the world in completely different ways, through a different cultural, and historical lense. This was an eye-opening experience for me, and made me realize how important cultural and historical empathy really is.
Ahah!: Tools like skype and Google can help connect students and classrooms in ways that will allow them to develop the empathy I believe to be so critical.
