I found Steve Job's commencement speech to be very enjoyable and moving. It is sad that the same cancer that he thought he had beaten at the time of this video would kill him just a few years later. Knowing what was in his near future made his words that much more powerful, and I am glad he was able to do what he wanted to do in life, because so many do not get the chance. His exhortations to follow your heart and not to settle really struck home with me personally. For many years I did just what he emplored the graduates not to do, and that is "live someone else's life". I had wanted to be a teacher for a long time, however, for many years I did not go back to school because of the uncertainty involved. I finally took a chance, quit the best job I have ever had, and went for it, and am glad that I did. Like Mr. Jobs said, you can only connect the dots looking backwards, you have to trust that the future will work out. It was not easy for me, and I am sure that there are many people who continue to do what they do not want to do with their lives, people who have settled. I hope that those people gain the courage to take the risk, because it is worth it.
In my own new career as a teacher, I plan on using this video to inspire my own students to follow their own dreams in life. Mr. Jobs may have dropped out of college, but he never stopped learning, and being a life-long learner is incredibly important. Technology is an important tool for life-long learning; where before a person may have had to continually drop in on college courses, now the majority of that information can be found on the internet, possibly on YouTube. Because of the immense possibilities that come with today's technology, I will be able to direct my students to resources and allow them to search out knowledge in different, hopefully effective ways. With the access afforded by today's technology, students will be able to access information on their own, or in the classroom, with ease.
