Prior to watching this YouTube video I did not really know what Instagram was. I was aware that it had something to do with sending pictures from one person to another, but I had not given it much more thought than that. In my mind, the only thing Instagram was used for was for self-centered people to post thousands of selfies online for everyone to adore; this did not interest me at all. In the video the author mentions Justin Bieber and how he just fills the web with pictures of his face, and that is exactly what I had pictured in my head. I had never considered that Instagram could be an avenue which people could use in order to tell a story, and I actually like that idea. There are times when a picture truly is worth a thousand words, or more for that matter. Sometimes words just do not cut it.
I know from my own experience that sometimes when I am trying to learn something, seeing it done or seeing a version of the final product can be extremely helpful. This tool can have many applications that will benefit students and teachers alike. The first way I can think to possibly use Instagram in the classroom would be to give students easy access to examples they can look at if they are working on a project at home, i.e. if science students are supposed to build a structure to support a certain amount of weight, the teacher could post a picture to Instagram that the students could access anywhere to give them inspiration. I also like the idea of using this tool as a medium to show student’s work. Students who are given an assignment that involves going to a museum or some other location than school could use Instagram to document where they went and what they saw. This documentation could be included in an assignment.
I am glad that I watched this short YouTube video, because it has made me aware of a tool that I was previously ignorant of; a tool that I believe can be useful in the modern classroom.
