Who Owns the Learning, Pg 13
Quote: “While we often focus on the growth of social media and internet access, technology’s most profound impact has been on the very concept of work. Information communications technology is completely reorganizing how, where, when, with whom, and even why people work.”
Question: Why do we focus on the growth of social media and internet access when changing the concept of work is likely going to be more impactful to people’s everyday lives?
Connection: My father and uncle both started and ran their own businesses. They operated in relatively low-tech fields (plumbing and construction). It took them years to learn what they needed through on the job work experience. If they had begun their businesses today instead of decades ago, they may have been able to expand their capabilities much more quickly and easily.
Ahah!: People are likely to concentrate on the most obvious new thing, it often takes considerably more reflection to identify how new technology will actually affect the way we do things. It is easy to concentrate on the brand new iPads in the classroom, but more difficult to actually use them in a way other than as fancy electronic textbooks.
