The video I used for the shading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExRRHY9wT6Q
So week one, learning to draw. It might seem strange, but I can not remember the last time I actually drew anything; I am not a big doodler and have never considered myself incredibly artistic. I figured I would start out slow....I did not realize just how slow would be. It turns out that I have a difficult time simply drawing a circle, so I started with simple shapes. I watched a number of YouTube videos which I found very helpful. After some practice was able to at least make something that somewhat resembled a circle, so I moved on to shading. It turns out that the first video I watched was actually the most helpful, because it was simple and actually showed the artist drawing each shape. The video I used for the shading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExRRHY9wT6Q It took a number of tries, but I was finally able to create a number of shapes that actually resemble what they are supposed to. I am going to continue to practice simple shapes for now, I think I will eventually move on to something like fruit,as that does not seem like too big of a leap from what I can currently do. I also may eventually start using pens, graphite, etc., but for now I am going to stick with simple pencil and paper.

Thank you for your post Mr. West! I enjoyed watching the video in which the artist demonstrates drawing 3D figures and shadows. I learned in art class how to shade similarly to this when I was in school, and I used it in math when I had to draw the 3D figures to find surface area and volume. It helped me to better visualize the shapes I was investigating in math, which helped me to get correct calculations. When I drew the shadows, however, mine were uniform in darkness rather than having the darkest part of the shadow up against the object and the shadow decreasing in intensity towards the tip. That's probably one reason why your images are superior to the ones I drew back then. Keep up the good work, you're doing a great job! I think you'll do just fine with drawing fruit, especially as it incorporates the basic figures you drew, namely the spheres are very much like oranges, apples, and other fruit.

Great post Mr. West. Very cool concept you chose; I always enjoyed drawing that know how to make good use of shading and it seems that you already have a decent grasp over it. That is one of my struggles so it is cool to see. I liked the video, I just wish it did not fast forward the whole time, I feel if it played in real time, it could better help me personally understand how to do the shading. Either way keep at it. I am excited to see what you come up with next.
